7 Days Roaming the South Island
This is just one example of the many itinerary options you have when freedom touring with a Maui Motorhome. It is designed to ease you into touring with your Motorhome with shorter days at the beginning and staying in locations with good quality Top 10 Holiday Parks.
Day 1 - Christchurch to Hanmer Springs 133kms:
Collect your Maui Motorhome from Christchurch Airport and before driving to Hanmer Springs, perhaps explore the Garden City of Christchurch. Your introduction to New Zealand will take you over the rolling hills of North Canterbury before heading inland to Hanmer Springs Village –internationally known for its thermal hot pools.
Day 2 - Hanmer Springs to Westport 218km:
Today journey over the Southern Alps via Lewis Pass before continuing on towards the West Coast town of Westport. From Westport it is only a short drive to Cape Foulwind to view one of New Zealand’s largest mainland seal colonies.
Day 3 - Westport to Franz Josef 278km:
The West Coast of the South Island offers one of New Zealand’s most spectacular drives. You will have time to stop at Punakaiki to visit the unique Pancake Rocks and Blow
Hole, then, with the inspiring Southern Alps dominating your view to the East you will eventually arrive in Franz Josef Glacier township. There are many options for activities in Franz Josef – perhaps take a helicopter flight with a snow landing with The Helicopter Line. You may choose to finish the day with a dip in the local Glacier Hotpools.
Day 4 - Franz Josef to Queenstown 357km:
A further drive south along the West Coast today before again crossing the Southern Alps over the Haast Pass. The scenery as you travel past Lakes Wanaka and Hawea with mountains dominating the background is breathtaking. Visit lakeside Wanaka before continuing on to the South Island’s alpine resort playground of Queenstown.
Day 5 - Take a break from driving in Queenstown:
A full day at leisure in Queenstown. There are so many activities in this beautiful town. Maybe take a trip on the lake in the historic steamship, the TSS Earnslaw, or a gondola ride to enjoy panoramic views across the region from the Skyline complex.
Day 6 - Queenstown to Fairlie via Lake Tekapo 299 kms:
Leaving Queenstown today the road will take you through Cromwell, and then to Omarama where more stunning views of the Southern Alps are on offer. Stopping at Tekapo will afford photo opportunities of Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd. Fairlie is a sleepy rural service town with shops, banks and an excellent Top 10 Holiday Park. A great place to overnight before returning to Christchurch.
Day 7 - Fairlie to Christchurch 179km:
Return to Christchurch via Geraldine and Ashburton before returning your Maui Motorhome at Christchurch Airport
